Setting up Password-less Login for Microsoft 365

A prerequisite for this guide is having the Microsoft Authenticator app configured on a mobile device.

Passwords are not being eliminated anytime in the near future, but you can use them "less" often to authenticate to Microsoft 365 web services "password-less".

This is still MFA,

i. The first authentication factor, is a two digit code you enter in the app.

  1. Random every time
  2. This is called "number matching"

ii. The second authentication factor is however you currently unlock your phone.

  1. PIN, Face ID, Finger ID
  2. You must have your phone on you. Your phone must have a PIN, Face ID or Finger ID to utilize this.

Setup

Step 1 - In a browser go to Outlook Web

Note: You will need to use a Private/Incognito Window or Sign-Out of your account to be able to set this up.

Step 2 - Enter your email & Click Next

Step 3 - Click Work or School Account (if prompted)

Step 4 - Click Use an app instead

Step 5 - Now, Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. The app will display a keypad to enter the code. 

Enter the number on your phone that is displayed in your browser. These will expire in about 30 seconds.
